University of Tasmania

The School of Government at the University of Tasmania is one of Australia’s oldest and most respected political science departments having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. The School boasts a comprehensive teaching program in the fields of international relations, public policy and governance, political science and police studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Despite the scope of the School of Government’s teaching program, the School is small enough to provide a supportive and collegial environment in which students enjoy good access to academic staff. For more information on the School of Government click here.

ABC Tasmanian Budget Interview

June 12  Interview on ABC TV’s Stateline on the 2009 Tasmanian State Budget http://www.abc.net.au/stateline/tas/content/2006/s2596840.htm

Topics for Media Comment

Academic political scientists should make informed contributions to public debate within their field of expertise. It’s a central part of our community engagement mission.

I am happy provide comment or interviews on issues concerning economic policy and governance and public sector reform. My specific expertise lies in the area of taxation policy, public finance and business regulation at the domestic and international/global levels.

I have written opinion pieces and given interviews for various Australian media outlets and appear regularly on ABC Tasmania’s TV current affairs program, Stateline.

Areas of Expertise

My published research focuses on domestic and comparative political economy with an emphasis on fiscal policy and tax reform. This work has been animated by institutional theory and the relationship between institutional dynamics and policy change.

My current research broadens this agenda by examining the dynamics and effectiveness of governance systems designed to promote international tax cooperation. The specific focus of my current book project is a comparative evaluation of the various frameworks and strategies promoted by the OECD in the international tax arena and how these governance systems have been influenced by and responded to the global financial crisis.

Over the next five years I intend to consolidate a research program on the dynamics of global economic governance which will examine the impact of a threshold event, such as the global financial crisis, on key global economic governance systems pertaining to taxation, finance and corporate governance.
